Phi Delta Psi

By Shabaz Hussain- Contributing Writer

As another year comes to an end, Phi Delta Psi has accomplished another round of successful events. Phi Delta Psi was established on Tuesday, February, 6, 1966. They were the first established fraternity at Southern New Hampshire University making it the oldest Greek organization on campus. Although the fraternity briefly went national under the wing of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity for a few years, Phi Delta Psi returned as an independent local fraternity during the 2003-2004 school year. Forty-one years and several hundred brothers later, Phi Delta Psi remains a strong and dedicated organization at Southern New Hampshire University.

The mission of Phi Delta Psi is to foster an environment for friends who want to become closer, like brothers, for life. They strive to maintain a close-knit bond between brothers and their sister sorority, Phi Omega Psi, that resembles an on campus family. Phi Delta Psi is committed to the idea of excellence in Greek life by living to a higher standard and according to their four points: Intellectual Awareness, Social Responsibility, Integrity, and Brotherly Love.

Being part of a fraternity is about more than just activities and having a good time. They were awarded the 2007-08 High House Award for the fraternity with the highest GPA at SNHU. This is the second straight year they have received this honor. As a fraternity they have an obligation to better the social environment on and off campus at SNHU. Phi Delta Psi does this by putting on events during the year for other students, participating in community service and raising money for charity. All of these efforts help to promote a better campus community. Integrity is a virtue that reflects the character of an individual. It signifies the consistent basis of an individual’s action on a set of principles or standards. Being a part of a fraternity demands integrity that is upheld by the brothers and a consistent attitude and respect for the four points as a way of life and a way for treating each other. Brotherhood is one of the chief reasons people join a fraternity, to make life long friends that are as close as brothers. Showing and maintaining that brotherly bond is part of their mission and one of their most important goals.

Some of the events Phi Delta Psi accomplished this year include raffling off Bruins and Red Sox tickets, maxing out the Last Chapter Pub with the annual Lip Sync Contest and Talent Show, raising over $2,000 for the 2009 Relay for Life, and adding three new valued members. Next year they will have the annual Welcome Back BBQ, along with a batch of new and interesting events. The brothers of Phi Delta Psi would like to wish everyone at SNHU a safe and fun summer.
